Berlin w/ strings is a singer-songwriter project by Max Berlin who has astonished everyone who thought film music and ensemble can not fit into the contemporary music narratives. His debut single ‘All Our Friends’ is an odd pair of orchestra music and complex lyricism weaved pretentiously into a perfect song.
The latest release of Berlin w/ strings, ‘Marion/Yeah’ is a two-song EP that had me begging for more towards the end of the second song. The best way to describe this piece is by calling it a whole movie packed into two songs. The first track is named ‘Marion’. The song starts off with a dramatic ambient melody with heavily reverbed vocals. The initial part of the song acts as a riser into the song and as the melody suddenly stops, the keys hover in blending the smooth vocals into the music. The dramatic elements of the song will make you restless while the soothing vocals calm you down. The song is one of its kind and is one of those songs which I wouldn’t want to replace from my playlist even while updating it.
“The EP is a perfect mix of symphony and chaos”
The second track of the EP is ‘Yeah’. I can declare that this song is my current personal favorite and one of the best tracks I have heard in a while. The melody sinks right into your skin making you feel nostalgic and fully aware of your presence at the same time. The exquisite symphony had me waving, feeling weightless like a feather. It wouldn’t be wrong if I said that ‘Yeah’ had a certain therapeutic effect on me, making me forget all about my problems and enjoy the profound sensation induced by the heartfelt symphonies. The song is so dramatic that it makes you wanna cry and elate your mind at the same time. The song had me air drumming through nearly half of the song. The lyrics are a true example of elegance well executed.
I would highly recommend this song for anyone who enjoys film music, music theater, studio orchestra or indie-pop because this EP is a perfect blend of all these worlds termed as genres.
