Mr. Sunshine is a Portugal-based producer who is bringing all the heat of 90’s Boom-bap rap mixed with some smooth R&B vocals through his mixtape ‘High Ground’. It is a 5-track EP made in collaboration with some stupendous artists of the genre which include: Bronze Nazareth & Roxiie Reese, Elisa Gobbi, Micwise, cpt.6_7 and Nekro G,. all these 5 songs beautifully represent Boom-bap rap with a chilled mood and an intense vocal performance. Mr. Sunshine aims towards standing apart from lame rappers and delivering beats that do not sound the same. Mr. Sunshine is making music that is driven by a desire to motivate, inspire and spread love to all those that hear it.
The mixtape certainly puts Mr. Sunshine on the higher grounds from other producers. Each track is innovative and a perfect resemblance of his versatility. The tracks are a feast for anyone who lives to listen the 90’s boom-bap rap and R&B music. The tracks are perfectly structured and strong both lyrically and musically.
First track – ‘In The Sky’ is a collaboration with Bronz Nazareth and Roxiie Reese. The track starts off with a soothing melody. The way Roxiie Reese carries her vocals is remarkable. Bronze Nazareth brings in some heavy bars which justify Mr. Sunshine’s strong musicality. The drum loops are addictive and compliment both the vocalist’s rhythm and style. This is the best track to start off the musical journey of ‘High Ground’. This track gets you ready for the heat that is going to drop in the next few tracks.
Second Track – ‘Take it Away’ featuring Micwise and cpt.6_7 is one of the most powerful songs of the album. Micwise brings on the game like he always does. The bars are smooth yet impactful. The music in this track is exquisitely composed perfectly tailored to back the lyricists. The flows are innovative and yet nostalgic in a way.
Third Track – ‘Paved The Way’ is the major highlight of the mixtape if you ask me. The vocals are crystal clear and Elisa’s vocals take the song to a higher plane. The music is soothing and yet powerful. The melody is catchy and rings in your head over and over again. Nekro G glides like butter on the beat dropping some sharp razor like bars.
Fourth Track – ‘Exile’ Shows the how deep rooted Nekro G’s lyricism is. Production is intricate and super smooth. The way Mr. Sunshine has executed his mixtape and structured the tracks gives me goosebumps every time I listen to ‘Higher Ground’.
The Final Track – ‘State Of Mind’ is a melodic R&B track where Elisa Gobbi shows how beautifully vocals can intertwine with the music to express complex feelings. The vocals are crystal clear and my heart melts listening to it. The music is ambient and the catchy. The synth pads make this song even better. This song is the outro of the mixtape and a perfect way to end the mixtape.
The mixtape is a perfect collection of melody and boo-bap rap. The musical part is strongly held together making it one of the best mixtapes I have herd in a while.
