The EP

Down the Road sounds sweet on the surface, with those slight jazz touches easing you in. The track makes me imagine it playing at a rest stop rooftop bar with fairy lights dangling everywhere, the sun almost setting, and you hear, “We don’t have to live our lives counting our regrets, and you said you would stay with me to the end of the road…once more, down the road.” The harmonies and backing vocals during the chorus make the song feel fuller, while the instrumentation glides over everything smoothly. Meanwhile, it leans into a folk-country style through how it tells its story, clear and melodic, and it keeps returning to the idea of “once more, down the road”—reinforcing continuation, of choosing to keep going even when things feel unresolved.

Then, Closer Than opens grand, with organ and percussion that feel rich and immediate. It sounds like you’re standing in front of a wall full of memories while it plays, and right now, you’re stuck in a phase of life where you’re not doing what you actually want, just hovering in place. And the lyrics push against that stillness, “Don’t stop taking chances, leave your fears behind. Live the stuff of dreams while you’ve got the time.” In other words, the song speaks from someone close enough to see everything clearly, yet still caught in the same pull. Moreover, lines like “we’re closer than the closest of all friends” and “I’m wrapped up in your world sometimes” blur the boundary between observer and participant. Still, the repetition doesn’t feel redundant; instead, it feels like insistence, like someone trying to shake you awake before time slips too far.

Finally, the two tracks by this point don’t feel separate—it feels like they’re answering each other without actually answering. Closer Than insists on movement, on taking chances before time slips, while Down the Road moves too, just without the same urgency. However, they don’t fully depend on each other. One pushes, the other steadies. They just leave you with that difference in pace, and just keep it intact.
