Zach Haselow is an alternative pop artist now based in Columbus, Ohio, following early years in Alaska. His latest release, The Kill is his second single, and it explores the aftermath of a toxic relationship. It follows Cruel For The Summer, a more vibrant release from 2025. Both tracks form part of his upcoming conceptual EP, which examines the experience of dating someone struggling with addiction.

The opening guitar of The Kill makes it sound like the kind of song you’d hear echoing from a distance when you’re on your rooftop. It carries that catchy, slightly depressed, dark melody, and you’re humming to it before you even realise it. Then the lyrics, “I still look you up online, to make sure you’re alive…I always knew you were dangerous, I guess I needed the thrill,” waste no time. It’s when you see the red flags, you feel the risk, but you still chase the thrill.
Throughout, the track leans into the metaphor of a car crash. “I’m playing a deer in your headlights…you showed me your teeth when you went in for the kill.” It frames the relationship as something sudden yet gradual, and violent. Meanwhile, the vocals carry a bite, they sound angry, anxious, still a little obsessed, and undeniably heartbroken.

Then when the climax finally bursts open, desperate and cathartic, you feel something crawling out after being held in too long. The Kill is the kind of song that breaks your heart a bit to write and even more to listen to. It lives in the emotional aftermath of a bad relationship. It’s anger, but not clean anger. It’s anxious, obsessive, still reaching back even when you know better. That’s why it feels like it’s running, you’re trying to keep up with something that already hit you.

Figuring out my path while actively plotting ten others. Serious about my dreams with somewhat chaotic ambition. Will do anything for cats.
