Austin-based artist Casey X. Waits moves between music, storytelling, comics, and visual art, building a body of work is deeply personal. The son of legendary songwriter Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, he has shaped his own voice through experimental lo-fi production, blues grit, hip-hop rhythms, and spoken-word vulnerability. His latest rock track, inside this song, released on April 22, 2026, as part of his album traveler’s songs, carries that unfiltered emotional weight. Outside music, Waits also creates graphic novels, comics, and visual art through projects like “I Drew These For Myself…” and ArtSmith Press.

inside this song opens with the sound of children playing, and suddenly you’re a kid again. You see flashes of summers that don’t exist anymore, of greener grass, of water balloons, and of friends whose faces now only survive in fragments. “All the people that I see are already gone, all the faces are lost in reflections,” sit inside nostalgia, and look at how much of life has already disappeared.
This track genuinely feels like it carries something alive inside it. The acoustic guitar attacks each chord in an aggressive but controlled way, constantly pulling itself back before completely falling apart. Meanwhile, the vocals scrape against the throat and force themselves outward with raw intensity. The track also weaves in memories of his father while carrying this lingering sense of coldness, even when everything around it feels warm.

inside this song has found a way to sound like it lives inside this zone, like a time capsule. It is nostalgic and melancholic, holding onto fading memories before they disappear completely, preserving them inside the music so they can survive just a little longer.

Figuring out my path while actively plotting ten others. Serious about my dreams with somewhat chaotic ambition. Will do anything for cats.
