Shakira Draws Two Million Fans to Free Copacabana Concert in Rio

Shakira’s 18-year-old self just realized her lifelong dream of creating history at Brazil’s famous Copacabana beach.

Colombian pop icon Shakira drew an estimated two million fans to a free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro Saturday night, city officials said. The massive event transformed one of the world’s most famous beaches into a lively sea of music and celebration.

The concert was part of her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour, named after her 2024 album. She started her set shortly after 11 p.m., more than an hour behind schedule, and fans cheered loudly while drones lit up the night sky with messages of love for Brazil.

Shakira performed several of her biggest hits including “Hips Don’t Lie,” “La Tortura” and “La Bicicleta.” As she performed, she remembered to take a moment to convey a message of hope about how women are resilient and strong in overcoming challenges.

Finally, the highlight of the night was when Brazilian singer Anitta joined her on stage. The duo performed “Choka Choka” live for the first time ever and the crowd went wild. She closed the show with “BZRP Music Sessions #53/66,” and millions of fans were left stunned.

The concert was part of a series of major performances by global stars in recent years and demonstrated Rio’s strategy of hosting big events to draw tourists and boost the local economy in between peak festive seasons.
