Plain Drifter Reflects on Life's Highs and Lows in “Long Way Down”

Based on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Australian rock project Plain Drifter returned with Long Way Down, a classic and folk-rock single released on June 26, 2026. Led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Lillicrap, the single is retrospective, with a timeless rock sound, featuring Mandy on backing vocals and Jake on drums.

Long Way Down opens like it’s walking back through old memories. The classic rock instrumentation carries this emotional weight to it, almost like you already know the lyrics are going to sting a little before they’ve even begun. Then they arrive, “When you’re up on top there is only one way to go… it’s a long way down.”

Rather than dwelling on success itself, the track focuses on everything that comes after it. Reaching the top isn’t presented as the finish line but it becomes the moment you realise how much there is to lose. The lyrics acknowledge that every high carries the possibility of a fall, making the track less about failure and more about accepting that life is constantly shifting between both.
