Dren McDonald Revisits Grief Through Memory on Album “Vox Pterous”

About the Artist

American composer, producer, sound designer, and multi-instrumentalist Dren McDonald released Vox Pterous on July 31, 2026, through Appearing Records. The ambient art-rock and minimalist album reimagines his acclaimed 2023 instrumental record Pterous, bringing in guest vocalists to reshape its layered guitar-orchestra compositions with new lyrics. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, McDonald has worked across music, film, and video games since the 1990s, contributing audio to Counter-Strike 2, Stranger Things VR, and Skulls of the Shogun. He has also collaborated with The Residents, Nels Cline, Josh Freese, and Iva Bittová.

The Album

Vox Pterous opens with Anchors Up, where gentle guitar arpeggios circle around precision legato phrasing, featuring Amelie Anna. It sounds like the clouds parting, the sky opening up, and something pulling you into the light. The lyrics, “Let’s hear it from the top…Rewind and play it back from the start,” bring in this feeling of going back through something again and again. The circles drawn over circles almost feel like someone trying to replay a memory until they can finally understand it.

Next, Resting of Light, featuring Carla Kihlstedt and Amelie Anna, brings in a much stronger rock and bass pulse. Inspired by Hardy Fox of The Residents, the track feels heavier and more physical. “Footprints on pavers…Fading in the rain,” sounds like watching something disappear right in front of you, while the jungle and rain imagery makes the whole thing feel a little strange and dreamlike.

There is something more unsettling about Aviator Eyes, a harmonic blend of soprano and tenor layers featuring Paula Frazer and Girl Swallows Nightingale. It sounds a little alarming. The entire song feels like it is pushing forward towards something, like something is peering and piercing through the darkness and you don’t quite know what it is.

That feeling of distance continues into The Things He Could Bury, built around an evolving, descending four-note motif. The fragmented lyrics, “Did you hear her call? Was her voice that small?” sound like pieces of a conversation you can barely hear anymore. It feels like trying to remember someone’s voice when it is already getting further and further away.

She’s The Sky follows with a warmer, more communal composition with Lily Bloom and Daria Novo. The vocals are deeper here, while the music sounds like it is running or hunting through a forest. “She’s the sky…Bending glass…bending wire,” gives the track this image of someone who cannot really be held in one place, almost like the sky itself.

Lastly, Fading, the record’s shortest and most ambient piece, featuring Sophia James, also served as the initial creative spark for the entire project. The vocals here sound like they are being sung from just under the surface of the water. “A wedding tattoo melts away…Floating through her bones and on…Through the rain,” feels like a memory slowly dissolving while you are still trying to hold onto it.

Finally, loss and grief sit blanketed over Vox Pterous. The lyrics, without the music, read like short poems, little pieces of someone’s life left behind, glimpses of scenes and sprinkles of memory all over. Each track sounds like another piece of someone’s story coming back into focus for a moment. Some are clearer, some harder to reach, and some already disappearing. The music gives these memories somewhere to live, while the lyrics leave you with the feeling of having walked through someone else’s memories and carried a few of them out with you.
