Native Son Carries Unanswered Questions Down the Road on “Dead Man Walking”

Long Island alternative rock four-piece Native Son released Dead Man Walking on August 28, 2026, the title track from their upcoming album. Drawing from 1990s grunge and alternative rock, the band channels guitar-heavy influences from The Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones. The release also carries a visual connection to classical art, with its artwork referencing Gustave Moreau’s Hesiod and the Muse.

Dead Man Walking opens with a bright melody, like something you’d hear on a long road trip, heading towards changing the course of your life but unable to shake the bittersweet feeling of having left something behind. The music feels like movement, while the lyrics keep looking back.

The lines, “There was I was through with talking… dead eyes, dead man walking… Can I see you again? Will I feel you again?” sounds like someone who has reached a point where they have run out of things to say but still cannot let go. “Dead eyes, dead man walking,” paints the image of someone moving through life without really feeling present in it. Then the questions, “Can I see you again? Will I feel you again?” bring the person back into focus, like looking at someone through a rearview mirror and wondering if you will ever see them again.
