50mething Reflects on Recovery Through “Slowly Through the Night”

50mething is the creative project of Paul Jenner, a 58-year-old independent musician, composer, and producer based in Ealing, West London. After working as a dancer and professional garden builder, Jenner entered music later in life. His latest release, Slowly Through the Night, was written from his experience of cancer recovery, turning a period of stillness in his life into a song about finding peace.

Slowly Through the Night opens with atmospheric sounds, almost like the quiet noises you hear when you sneak out onto the road at night, with the whole world asleep. There is something about the silence that makes you hear your own thoughts a little louder. The music moves slowly, giving the whole track this feeling of being suspended somewhere between night and morning.

Then the lyrics come in, “I saw my life flash by before me… as I walk slowly through the night, looking for a reason, I don’t want to live forever, just another day, please don’t take me now.” There is this mix of fear, exhaustion, and wanting to hold onto life. “I don’t want to live forever, just another day,” plants the tracks’ feet into the ground. It isn’t asking for some huge future, just a little more time. The lyrics sound like someone trying to find a reason to keep moving while everything around them has gone still.

The production also stays bare-bones, which makes the uncertainty feel even bigger. Then, towards the end, a trumpet comes into play, almost like a distant sound reaching you from somewhere outside. Slowly Through the Night is like something that plays inside your head when you have too much on your mind and decide to take a long drive just to clear it. The road is empty, streetlights keep passing over the windscreen, and you are just moving with your thoughts.
