Joey Rival Opens EP “Creative Destruction” With “We Are The Dark”

Independent metal artist Joey Rival opens his 2026 concept EP Creative Destruction with the heavy metal track, We Are The Dark. It continues his DIY approach, handling every part of the creative process himself, without AI. Built around sharp guitar work and intense energy, the track pushes deeper into the intense themes shaping the three-track release.

We Are The Dark opens on eerie music box notes that sound like the moment you push open the door to an abandoned haunted mansion. The track hangs there just long enough to make you uneasy before hardcore percussion and grinding guitars suddenly crash through everything. Then it pulls itself back into silence for a split second, only to slam straight back into the chaos again.

“We are alive,” comes through in this distorted vocal fry that sounds almost inhuman, pressing closer and closer as the track builds. As the guitars build and the drums start drilling harder into the track, that feeling only grows harder to escape from. Beneath all the noise, the track feels deeply frustrated, about how cold and artificial everything around us is becoming, especially when it comes to creativity and music. The track shows people replacing real emotion with something lifeless and mechanical without even stopping to question it. That same feeling runs through the entire EP too, especially in the title Creative Destruction, which frames the project less as reinvention and more as people stripping something real away piece by piece.

We Are The Dark carries the atmosphere of standing inside a dark green-grey forest at night while flames slowly begin spreading through the trees around you. It feels angry, paranoid, and claustrophobic all at once, like watching something deeply human slowly disappear in front of you while nobody around you seems to notice.
