Seoul-born, Los Angeles-based artist Rylai continues to build momentum with Issues, an alt-pop and R&B single released in April 2026. Drawing from a background that spans both physics and music production, Rylai pairs intimate songwriting with understated production, using the track to explore the heartbreak and vulnerability of letting go and moving on from a relationship.

Issues starts off with a simple acoustic melody, with lyrics sung in a way that feels intentionally choppy. The vocals constantly pull away, taking breaths and breaking off at unexpected moments, giving the song an almost poetry-like feel. The main refrain, “If you love me, can you let go of me?” hangs over everything, feeling less like a question and more like a final plea.
While the lyrics, “If you love me, can you let me be? So I can go back to being lonely,” carry the weight of someone completely drained by emotional baggage. There’s no anger in the delivery, no dramatic heartbreak, it just feels like the voice of someone who has spent too long carrying the remains of a relationship and is finally asking to be released from it. The loneliness they’re returning to almost sounds comforting compared to the weight of holding on.

Midway through, the track begins to open up. The acoustics are joined by percussion and other textures that slowly build around the listener. What started sparse and fragile suddenly feels full, like a blanket being pulled over you. The sound grows wider and warmer, surrounding every corner of the song without losing its intimacy.
Issues is the kind of track that would play during a late-night drive after a difficult goodbye. Streetlights blur past, the road ahead disappearing into darkness while something fades in the rearview mirror. It’s less about a clean break, but more a slow, exhausting process of loosening your grip on someone who you loved.

Figuring out my path while actively plotting ten others. Serious about my dreams with somewhat chaotic ambition. Will do anything for cats.
