Fan Records 10,000 Concerts Over 40 Years – Historic Music Archive Upload in Progress

Aadam Jacobs spent decades recording live music while building a vast archive of concerts. Starting as a teenager, he captured over 10,000 shows across 40 years. Starting with simple recording devices like a borrowed Dictaphone at first, he later upgraded to better equipment like the Walkman.

In 1989, he recorded an early Nirvana show in Chicago. The band was still unknown then. During the show, Kurt Cobain addressed the crowd with an iconic line – “Hello, we’re Nirvana. We’re from Seattle.” That moment now lives on through Jacobs’ tape.

A Rare Window Into Music History

Jacobs recorded many artists before they became famous. Some recordings capture rare performances. One includes a 1990 Phish concert. Another features Boogie Down Productions.

Jacobs’ collection is vast. Focused primarily from the mid ‘80s to the early 2000s, the tapes track the growth of the burgeoning indie and punk rock genres through Chicago and other U.S. cities. The portion of the collection already online confirms that it boasts artists from Hüsker Dü, Camper Van Beethoven, and Fugazi to Neko Case, Depeche Mode, and John Cale. Jacobs also recorded pivotal early-career performances by Nirvana, Sonic Youth, the Cure, and the Replacements, and more.

The collection also includes lesser-known artists, many of whom never reached wide fame. This makes the archive even more valuable. Fans can now explore this history online. The recordings are available on the Internet Archive. Listeners can stream or download them for free.

Volunteers Race to Preserve Fragile Tapes

A team of volunteers now works to save the old cassette tapes. They digitize and restore each recording. Brian Emerick leads much of this effort. He transfers tapes into digital files in real time, while also repairing old recording machines.

Emerick has already digitized thousands of tapes, yet, many more still remain. Other volunteers clean the audio and add details and the team works carefully to identify songs and artists.

Jacobs now fully backs the preservation effort, and many of the artists he recorded have also welcomed it. Although he stopped attending and recording concerts due to declining health, his passion for live music remains strong.

Today, he still enjoys experiencing live music he finds online, much of it recorded by a new generation of fans. “Since everybody’s got a cellphone, anybody can record a concert,” he said.
