“The Wolf” by Craig Small Music Sets the Stage for a Cinematic Female Reckoning

Australian multi-instrumentalist Craig Small returns with The Wolf, an indie-rock single he co-produced with Peter Schilling, while Cristina Maria delivers the lead vocals.Inspired by 90s Japanese anime female protag revenge archetypes, he drives the track with distorted bass, trippy guitars, and tense rhythms. Following his 2025 debut single Sunkiss, the former Astral Taxi and King Fallen co-founder now pushes his solo project toward atmospheric alt-rock and cinematic pop.

The Wolf opens like a sprint on concrete. First, the pace pushes you forward, restless and alert. Then, lines like, “Alpha female set to sail, into a wilderness of light,” frame a woman stepping into her own storm. It truly paints a picture: an opening scene of a late-night anime film, the city glowing in neon while a lone woman walks through crowded streets. The lyrics add to it, “You will pay for your sins,” a cold promise, calm, focused, already ten steps ahead.

Next, the uplifting but tense guitars follow her through flickering alleyways and empty overpasses, the rhythm almost tip-toeing ahead like a plan unfolding in real time. Meanwhile, “Suit of grey, set to slay. The wolf is here to stake her claim,” sounds like armor clicking into place—gloves tightening, breath steady, the past flashing behind her.

Also, the sound never turns dark for the sake of it; it pushes forward with purpose, echoing that classic 90s anime revenge arc where strength comes from clarity, not chaos. Moreover, it sets the mood without spelling everything out, trusting listeners to follow the fire. Finally, The Wolf becomes more than a moment; it’s when a protagonist decides she’s done surviving and starts reclaiming her story.
