Den Edie Leans Into Intensity on New Single “Wide Open”

Den Edie, born Dennis Shan Edie, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Dover, Ohio. Active since 1989, he moved from metal bands to leading Vein before a long hiatus. He returned in 2017 with a genre-blending style. His latest release, Wide Open, arrives as both a new single and album title track, capturing his mix of punk, rock, and melodic influences with a distinct, time-warped edge.

Wide Open like it’s dragging you into a 80s fairytale anime, and then the grunge-like guitar rips through. The vocals carry an almost unprocessed edge, “Could it be something I might just have said, keeps getting me kicked in the head, wide open.” At first, it sounds like frustration, but it’s a loop of overthinking everything you say until it starts turning against you.

Meanwhile, the percussion stays overpowering, which keeps that pressure sitting right on top of you. However, the chorus shifts the meaning slightly. “Straitjackets, curtains for me…if you open your eyes you might see everything isn’t hopeless for you to hold on, wide open,” stops being about getting stuck in your head and starts pushing toward actually seeing past it, even if that doesn’t come easily.

By the end, it almost spills over itself. The harmonies, percussion, and the chorus comes back louder, and more insistent, like it’s trying to break through. And then, it goes out quite literally with a bang, leaving you still in it, wide open.
