MyKungFu Keeps Returning to the Same Ruin on “Damage”

MyKungFu is the solo project of Swiss multi-instrumentalist Domi Schreiber. Over his career he has performed across major festivals like OpenAir St. Gallen, Gurten Festival, and Paléo Festival. He has also worked as a guitarist for Jaël Malli and composed film music alongside Sebastian Horn, building a varied career across stage and screen.

His track Damage appears on his 2012 album Repeat Spacer, a self-produced release via Deepdive Records. The album brings together 12 tracks that treat pop as something flexible, shifting in sound and structure from one moment to the next.

Damage sounds like cycling through the European countryside carrying heartbreak as your passenger. Right away, the indie pop sound runs up the beat like it’s marching, knees high, while the vocals come in and smooth it over with memory.

Meanwhile the lyrics feel scattered, almost distracted, with lines about time slipping and things taking too long. The refrain, “uh, uh, all the damage done again,” ties into that loop of repeating mistakes and missed timing. And the line, “uh, uh, sinking battleships again,” shows something already broken being pushed under once more.

Moreover the vocals move through it almost casually, like they’re remembering instead of reacting. And the sound keeps that light forward motion making Damage play out like a sequence of passing frames and then it ends on the refrain, like it’s caught mid-thought, but nothing really changed.
