Sha’Leah Nikole – Work of HeART | Versatile Genres

Sha’Leah Nikole is an NAACP Theatre award recipient and singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. She began her musical journey at the tender age of 9 and has worked tirelessly to get where she is. She cites influences from Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Musiq Soulchild, Anita Baker, and Stevie Wonder. Moreover, she isn’t too proud to learn from the people around her, even picking up tips from her peers at Amazing Grace Conservatory. Her work, certainly, speaks for itself with how talented Sha’Leah Nikole truly is.

Her latest project is a 6-track EP with a run time of nearly 19 minutes. The EP starts off on Wanna Ride, a track that really plays around with itself. It’s one of those tracks that reminds me of that Anderson .Paak style. However, Sha’Leah Nikole creates this R&B, Soul, and Pop vibe that keeps things light and groovy. Moreover, her voice is absolutely beautiful and adds to the light textures set up in the intro to the song. The beats are deep and heavy, adding a load of depth to the track. Additionally, the backup vocals add these streaks of textures to the main melody.

King Me is another great track that features D Smoke. Originally released as a single, possibly to promote the EP, King Me is a strong piece on its own. It is certainly a great addition to the Work of HeART EP, though. This is the kind of track that you’d probably listen to when you need a pick-me-up. D Smoke comes in with vocals that remind me of Kendrick Lamar and J Cole. This track really hits the spot and Sha’Leah Nikole does a phenomenal job on both the lyrics as well as the execution. With plenty of talent, this track is definitely something fans of R&B will enjoy.

Blew Your Mind features Blaq Thompson and is just another great addition to this EP. It is a smooth, sweet track that can really get you in any mood. There is so much Soul and love in this track. I can’t imagine anyone disliking this track or any track on this EP. Moreover, you can really lose yourself in the easy-going beats and light textures, but the vocal textures really get me. Sha’Leah Nikole and Blaq Thompson have created a track that Blew Your Mind. That’s all there is to it. Easily, my favourite track on the EP.

Love Letter is a little different and features an acoustic guitar with some rustiness. I think this song really shows how versatile Sha’Leah is. Her voice is so strong and powerful that you can’t help but admire it. Moreover, the single guitar accompaniment and vocal work are executed perfectly. The countermelodies on this track are super intuitive and add so much to the song as a whole.

Lovin You is a hard turn from Love Letter. This track sounds more like a club song with electronic elements. I think this is yet another dimension to Sha’Leah Nikole and her versatile side. She can truly create her identity in any genre and it is amazing to say at least. Even Mahogany showcases how talented she is. It’s like she wanted to show us just how good she is at everything. At this point, it feels like she’s showing off because she can and I’m here for this.
