Persistence grows more resolute when the soul’s desire to survive is stronger than the life force of the human who carries it. Shelby Lock was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, in 2019. During her recovery, doctors repeatedly consoled her with the words, “It’s a matter of time,” assuring her that she would eventually recover. Shelby transformed those words into an opportunity to compose “A Matter of Time”. Her persistent resilience eventually took her to the Kennedy Center, where she performed from her wheelchair. This year, she re-orchestrated the composition with the Venezuela Strings Recording Ensemble, adding “Perseverancia” to its title as a tribute to the soul’s enduring desire to bloom, persist, and be heard.

Shelby has magically connected the extreme hard work one needs to be persistent in music. She has captured so beautifully, sonically, the difficulty of keeping desires relevant and alive. The slowness and steadiness it requires, the patience that grows within, are things parents or teachers can’t teach, but only life’s experiences can. And Shelby’s music reflects that knowing. Shelby Lock is a pianist, composer, audio engineer, and owner of Santa Cruz recording studio Silver Moon Sound. A three-time finalist in The American Prize in Composition, she creates music that uplifts, inspires, and transports listeners. She performed her piano compositions at the John F. Kennedy Center in 2022 and won the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2016 Composition Competition with Out of Ashes. As a pianist, Shelby has performed on recordings by acclaimed artists including Bootsy Collins, Vmsix, Jess Lamb, and others. Her audio engineering credits span more than 250 projects, including work for GRAMMY® winners Bootsy Collins and Bash Killa, and two-time GRAMMY® nominee Eric Alexandrakis.
