London based Matty Benbrook, Pauline Taylor and Donny Little found themselves drawn together by their shared love of blues, folk, soul, the occasional sprinkling of electronica mixed with some good old-fashioned songwriting has manifested in the formation of their band Little Drum. Having just released their first EP, “Darling Ocean” is an introspective, four song EP that just touches your heart. Their individual talents come together in this EP which is a gentle landscape of retro influences and pop sensibilities with themes of hope, love and loss – inspired by experiences in music, life and a love for London.
This EP has been in the works since 2014 and found fruition in the pandemic. The first song on the EP is called Darling Ocean. A song with a strong unplugged, acoustic sensibility that transforms you. This song has an indie folk vibe and the harmonies and smaller hints of electronica really accentuate the piece itself. Darling ocean is a song about giving in to and overcoming your fears – of diving in and facing the unknown.
The second song, Love is the Key, really picks up the pace with its fast-paced rhythm and beats. The song works on multiple levels and is a message in itself. Love is the Key, explores the relationship with oneself and how we interact with the world. Social media has allowed the world to be privy to some deeply unhappy people who feel the need to hurt others, the song explores these ideas. This song is defined by its almost synth like harmonies, which really add so much depth to Pauline’s beautiful vocals.
Runner is a more of a slow, sensuous introspective ballad. Runner has more of an acoustic vibe. The guitar and the vocals really take center stage in this one. The song explores interpersonal relationships. Sometimes when first getting into a new relationship, one person will fall harder and faster. The other will be more cautious. The song explores this negotiation between people.
Traffic and the Rain features some beautiful vocals. This was the perfect song to end the EP on. It is introspective and uplifting. The song is an ode to appreciating and living in the present because you don’t know what you’ve had until you’ve lost it.
Darling Ocean by Little Drum is an excellently produced EP which is an excellent rainy day listen.
