Rod Coote – Wild Pine | Nostalgia

Rod Coote is back with his second single of 2021. The Australian indie-folk, singer-songwriter is back with yet another charming single Wild Pine. It is a dreamy indie-folk song, with honest, emotional lyrics, a gentle background of vocal harmonies and a harmonious acoustic guitar.

The song begins with a beautiful atmospheric chorus accompanied by Coote’s signature strumming. The song is honest and sentimental as it has a history attached to it. Having penned it down following the unexpected death of his grandfather, the song is a cathartic tribute to a loved one. The song doesn’t force this grief on you but lets you immerse yourself into the music. Although the song is inspired by grief it hones in a strong inspirational and nostalgic appeal.

A quintessential indie-folk song, Wild Pine also reminds me of the likes of Bon Iver, Ben Howard, Saint Motel. And dare I say, also gives me a strong Dark-Academia vibe? His music is very reminiscent of his youth and growing up in the countryside of New South Wales and has the capacity to immediately transport you there. Thematically, the song is a great addition to his discography. The song ends with the line “Leaves won’t fall, from this Wild Pine..” , left me feeling comfortable but with the most inspiring call-to-action. A perfect addition to any indie-healing with nature playlist, I will be listening to Rod Coote on a long drive, while studying or while unwinding on a lazy, relaxing Sunday.
