Melodic hooks, soaring harmonies, and vintage 80’s synth and guitar vibes are the defining features of Alta Falls, an Australian-based indie alternative outfit formed during the onset of COVID-19. This indie-alternate rock band is one of the good things we got as a result of the pandemic. The Fire is the title track of Alta Falls’ debut EP, which is produced by Aidan Hogg (Jaguar Jonze, Holy Holy). It features Sebastian ‘Baz’ Jennings Hingston (Tia Gostelow) on drums.
Revolving around the idea of nature, their EP and this single is very rooted in these high energy, uplifting, danceable beats and punchy hooks. They have very vast sounding instrumentals and harmonies that are incredibly immersive. Their vintage synth and guitar instrumentals really set them apart. After spending much of 2020s lockdown together, Alta Falls’ members took a deep dive exploring the social and global landscapes brought to light by the pandemic. The Fire has these sections in the song where they play with pulsating guitar instrumentals and silences. These progressive parts create a sort of pacing for the song that is emphasizes the immersive experience. Alta Falls draws on a wide range of influences, including The Preatures’ rhythms, Spacey Jane’s guitars, The Weeknd’s synth lines, and The Wombats’ enthusiasm, to create their own unique take on modern indie.
Their EP is a new indie-alternative take on the theme of nature, and it’s proving them to be a force of nature as well. With their succinct retro instrumentals and their soaring harmonies, Alta Falls is definitely one of my favourite finds. Alta Falls is really pushing the bounds of what contemporary indie alternative rock can be with their unique sound. I look forward to listening to more of their work!
