Carla Kerridge – Not the One | Seductive

London based singer-songwriter, Carla Kerridge is here with her first single, “Not the One”. A self-taught musician and producer Carla is deeply influenced by R&B, Pop, and Soul music. These influences find themselves beautifully manifested in her single.

The song begins with a strong, groovy beat that can get you dancing in a minute. Her lyrics reflect her emotions and seem to translate her ideas and emotions into music. Carla Kerridge also displays a seductive and dynamic vocal range. The catchy tune features Urban Latin, Pop, and Soul influences and tells the story of Carla’s life. Originally from France and is now based in London, where she’s discovering a whole new way of life and making music. The song also has a fun feature by London based rapper, Lobo.

I was fortunate enough to interview Carla and here’s what she had to say:

1. Your bio says that you are a self-taught musician and producer. How long have you been experimenting with music production?

I started playing the guitar when I was 16 years old, and was able to accompany myself enough to write a full song. However, it’s really “thanks” to the lockdowns that I’ve found time and the motivation to experience and learn how to build around my guitars through production!

2.Can you tell us a little more about your inspiration for this track?

I was just playing around, trying things and different sounds. When I’ve started to add a few elements together, it made me think of something under latin influence. And I thought that this instrumental would be perfect for a movie or a TeleNovellas.

I didn’t really plan on writing any lyrics. But then, as I was doing the production, I forgot that I was cooking dinner at the same time and burnt the food! And I was so into my music that it gave me inspiration straight away to write the words! It’s the fastest song that I’ve ever done!

The beats and the guitar in the background almost take you by the hand through the deeply emotive journey that the song is. A perfect song for Bachata or Cha-Cha-Cha, if you are someone who is deeply into Latinx music and dance, this track is the one for you. The song gives me Sade, Amy Winehouse and early Rihanna (Unfaithful) vibes.

Carla Kerridge, like a lot of us uses her music to explore her identity and relationship with the world and here’s what she had to say about it. The song has the capacity to draw you into its melody and groove with the beat.

3.You have quite a rich ethnic heritage. Has this affected your music in any way? If so, how?

It definitely has! So far, being mixed race is one of the greatest things that happened to me! Imagine, I got the best of both worlds haha! It opened my mind to all genres and styles of music. I can really listen to anything!

4. The lyrics of this song are very sincere, and I love how you are taking a stand for yourself. Do you think your music is an extension of this? How do you explore more emotions like this through your music?

Yes, that’s why I’m trying my best to do my own productions, and writing my own lyrics. I love the idea of bringing a seed of my brain to life, and exposing it. I love the independence and the learning process just as much! And as I use music as a therapy, as a life support, I have to write and do songs from my emotions in order to deal with them.

5. Who are some of your favourite musicians, and how do they influence your work?

I am a huge fan of Rihanna and Beyoncé! They mostly made my childhood! I love the power and confidence they own. I’ve always really admired the Black Eyed Peas as well and their attention to details in every single song and production of them! It really pushes me in my work and motivates me to always do better!

Not unlike her inspirations, Kerridge attention to detail really comes through with her vocals. If you’re looking for more music from Carla Kerridge, do not fear. With some new genres and music to produce she seems optimistic and excited of her future. Look what she has to say about it, below:

6.Do you have any new music that we should be looking forward to?

I am currently working on my second release which would be a Pop song! I’m really looking forward to releasing that one and sharing it with everybody as I know that many people are going to identify themselves to the lyrics and the story of the song…

7. What are some music goals that you would like to achieve – maybe a performance or a style you’d really like to try?

Collecting a couple of Grammy’s wouldn’t be bad! 😉

If you’re looking for a seductive, beautiful number to set the mood, this is the one for you.
I don’t know about you but “Not the One” by Carla Kerridge is definitely the one for me!
