Walden tunes back into acoustic dark neo-folk for his beautiful EP, “Die goldene Birke”

Walden taps into the very nature of his being for the folk compositions he creates. It can almost be said it is an outlet for his thoughts. Nature speaks through him, he is an amazing medium for it. His latest album speaks to this, in detail and entirety. They share a same space of mind and melody in this album. This is called Die goldene Birke.

Unlike many other acoustic neo-folk and dark folk projects, Walden dips into all the elements, not just the lead instrument. It is interesting to hear him capture all this texture, it is not skin deep. The percussions for the opening song Weltenbaum is a prime example. This is where the percussion becomes as important as the melody, so you’re moving with the part of the forest. If the tale is being narrated, the harmonics are the morals that fall just in place.

Softer, more emotional and intent rich is the second song. It is the song the album is titled after, a gentle and pained admission. Like the witness of the ever-changing forest, this is like hearing the account of the tree, the rich bark speaking to the heart of the forest. It is an incredible number, for notes don’t rush in flurry. Like a wise scholar would speak, she flows with deliberation. Perhaps why you’re left with a tear in your eye, if not more.

Speaking a second tongue

Regentag continues this soliloquy. It seems like we are going back in time, from a montage that is more recent. Tones change, creating an overlap that is especially interesting to listen to. The addition of electric tones with reverberation is the echo of the woods. Walden holds notes for longer, not because he is thinking, because that is what nature is telling him. He is merely a medium, who can speak that language like a gift.

Goldener Herbst taps into the peppy youth of younger organisms. It is a quicker tempo, something that isn’t pushed or printed unnecessarily. Instead, you feel it in your heart’s metronome, and that seems to be sufficient. There are times when you feel like you’re in a bossa nova groove, but genres wilt away when the music is so verdant.

Der Himmel bei Nacht uses some more background textures to make an evergreen descent. Though the melody is a pattern you might have heard before, it is layered intuitively to make a lasting impression.

Die andere Seite is almost like the woods bidding you farewell. It is a gentle juxtaposition from where we began, as the woods have no entry and exit. It is all a homogenous whole, with heterogeneous working parts. Walden makes it seem like he stays with nature, at least parts of his brain and soul. Writing from the heart makes it a lot warmer.

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
