Already Legends – Big Bet | groovy

With a long history of rap, Detroit’s Already Legends Entertainment is also joining the hip hop hallways with their new album, Big Bet. Already Legends Collective comprises members SavageSpitFlamez, L.O.E. Boog, Squad and Sam Tate. The collective is known for their energy, wordplay and their eclectic production style. Each member pushes their craft and is passionate about representing their city and culture while adding their own spin to it.

Their debut album is a massive and carefully curated playlist of songs that will have you grooving in no time. With 14 songs and a 42-minute run time, it is clear that Already Legends pulled all stops with this one. Their first track Take Control Intro, has a sing-along vibe to it. It balances muted vocal works with verses. Their instrumentation has a classical R&B feel.

The next track, Game Came with Contact displays a faster paced beat with an ominous hint to it. All three rappers showcase their verses with ultimate precision. Keep Snowin’ has that signature flute/sax sound that we associate with old school rap. Down To the Roach is meant to keep you on your feet. It displays a playful but precise syncopation that will become an ongoing theme in the rest of the album. With the first four songs, a listener will easily slip into the vibe of the entire album. They have an upbeat, higher bpm production with very specific instrumentals that give off a very specific vibe. They display what we could call raw street vibes mixed with a lyrical splash and old school music.

The next track, Sea Moss Freestyle, is heavier and has more melancholic instrumentals. This track is layered carefully and gradually picks up with the beat. The track, Bleezy Sparked, has the classic R&B type sax instrumental that makes you immediately nostalgic. Incorporated into the rap where the verse plays off of the sax energy, this track oozes sophistication.

Do What It Do, picks up the pace with a quick beat and quick rap. Activity, as an arrangement, is a display of conversation. The syncopated movement of the vocals and verses from the foreground to the background puts the track into perspective for you. This conversational feel continues into the next track, Big Bet, where the rap culminates with an epiphany of sorts. This is seen through the distinct, almost auto-tuned vocals.

The track, WTF, changes the vibe of the album. This track is fast-paced and shows off a pulsating, piano instrumental. I think my personal favourite might just be Disco Madness. This track has the most immaculate, old-school rap vibe, and you can’t help but immediately groove to it. Start 2nite, also has the same vibe as Disco Madness.

Jumpman pushes this classic rap feel to present times. More modern in its production, the verses are more rooted in traditional rap. The last track on this album is called ALE Outro is definitely representative of the collective as a whole.

Already Legends, remind me of collectives like Odd Future and an OTF (One True Family). Their music has an off-beat, syncopated flow that they execute very well. Their production also has fat 808’s that are in the lower end of the bass spectrum. The also running high hats, layered synthesizer sounds, lots of pads and synths for ambience. This album is well thought of and a perfect way to debut. Already Legends represent and pride themselves on their unity, strength, creativity and a strong work ethic.

If you’re looking for some really cool rap with great production, Already Legends ‘ Big Bet is an album to check out.
