AI is a synth-pop duo comprising musician Bobby Cheatham and writer Liz Feezor from Austin, Texas. AI, who credit Depeche Mode, The Eurythmics, David Byrne, Nine Inch Nails, and Devo as musical influences, uses synths, industrial rock noises, and ethereal voices to explore complicated moods and ideas in their songs. The pair formed in 2019, and in the second half of the year, they released the singles ‘Purple’ and ‘Miss Understood Was a Late Bloomer.’
Their newest single Parallel Lines is composed of their signature styles of synth, industrial rock elements and melodic harmonies. What opens with suspenseful synth sounds slowly segues into synth melodies and really strong vocals. The track has a calm urgency to it where you aren’t taken away by it but are slowly immersed into it. A combination of futuristic soundscapes with the synth, 70-80s type harmonies and very specific instrumentals, AI carves out a niche for itself. What’s unique about AI’s music is the almost melancholic, nostalgic, gothic undertones in their music. They also create a space for themselves to explore not only various themes, but also different emotional wavelengths of their sound.
AI’s key themes are gender roles, androgyny, futurism, and the impact of technology, with each song paying respect to human emotions—and the pervasive influence of robots in our lives. AI wrote all the songs, while Bobby Cheatham recorded and mixed them at DNATX Studio. AI is definitely a treasured find for all those who stumble by it. A mix of comforting and thought-provoking, AI pushing boundaries with their synth-pop soundscapes.
