French metal titans Gojira captured their first-ever Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance with their powerful rendition of Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!). The track, a bold reimagining of a French Revolutionary classic, was performed alongside experimental French-Swiss opera singer Marina Viotti during the 2024 Paris Olympic opening ceremony.
The band’s unforgettable performance took place outside the historic Conciergerie prison, where Marie Antoinette was famously imprisoned before her execution. With scorching riffs, vivid pyrotechnics, and a dramatic portrayal of a headless Antoinette, Gojira delivered a breathtaking spectacle that redefined metal’s creative boundaries.
The band triumphed over fierce competition, beating Metallica’s Screaming Suicide, Judas Priest’s Crown of Horns, Spiritbox’s Cellar Door, and Knocked Loose’s collaboration with Poppy, Suffocate.
While Gojira basked in their historic win, other rock legends also claimed awards. The Rolling Stones secured Best Rock Album for Hackney Diamonds, and The Beatles’ revived demo Now And Then won Best Rock Performance.
St. Vincent emerged as one of the biggest winners, earning multiple accolades including Best Rock Song and Best Alternative Music Album.
Gojira’s Grammy win further cements their place as innovators in the global metal scene, blending history and brutality with stunning artistry.
