MTV Video Music Awards Returns with Record Number of First-Time Nominees at 35

Tuesday night will see the return of the MTV Video Music Awards, and for the first time, the category for artist of the year will have solely female nominees. For the night’s top honour, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Karol G, and Shakira are competitors.

Special Shoutout to 50 Years of Hip-Hop

A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Anuel AA, Ashanti, Billy Porter, Chloe Bailey, Dove Cameron, Fat Joe, Halle Bailey, Nelly Furtado, René Rapp, Saweetie, Shenseea, Thalia, Tiffany Haddish, Timbaland, and Wyclef Jean are among the presenters that have been confirmed for the VMAs’ final round as of Tuesday morning.

Minaj will serve as the host of the VMAs, which are held in the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, not far from New York City. She emceed last year alongside Jack Harlow and Lil Wayne; this year, she does so alone.

A star-studded, multi-generational finale concert featuring DMC, Doug E. Fresh, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LL Cool J, and Minaj will also commemorate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.

Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT, MTV will broadcast the VMAs, which will also be televised simultaneously on BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TVLand, and VH1. UniMás will also broadcast the programme in Spanish.

Brand New Social Categories

After MTV revealed four extra social categories earlier this month, Swift’s nominations jumped to 11, including seven for seven for her “Anti-Hero” music video. SZA is next to her, with eight. Swift presently has 14 VMAs under her belt, trailing Beyoncé (28) (including two with Destiny’s Child)., Madonna (20), and Lady Gaga (19), who each have more than she her.

This year features a record number of first-time nominees at 35! Including Kim Petras, who has five noms, Metro Boomin’ with four and Rema with three. Aespa, Burna Boy, Davido, Eslabon Armado, FIFTY FIFTY, PinkPantheress, Saucy Santana, Stephen Sanchez and Toosii are also nominated for the first time.

In addition to accepting the Video Vanguard Award, Shakira is scheduled to perform at the event. Previous recipients include Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott.

Diddy follows the footsteps of Foo Fighters and RHCP

For the first time since 2005, Diddy will perform at the VMAs while accepting the Global Icon Award. He will be the third person to get it, following the Foo Fighters in 2021 and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in 2022.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion (singing their brand-new song, “Bongos”), Anitta, Demi Lovato, Fall Out Boy, Peso Pluma, Doja Cat, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Mneskin, Olivia Rodrigo, Stray Kids, Tomorrow X Together, and more are among the other artists anticipated to play.
