Threatfest : Kolkata Musicians Pay Tribute to Evergreen Rock-Metal Acts

Last Sunday, the 12th of April, Kolkata’s Princeton Club witnessed homegrown rock and metal acts paying tribute to their favourite music stars. Founded in 2022 by Debarshi Sarkar, Threatfest‘s 2023 lineup included names like The Girish and The Chronicles (GATC).

For “Triubute To The Lost Legends”, we saw Super X and Outlaw along with heavy metal band Decider and rock ‘n’ roll outfit Plumpjacket.

The evening started with Plumpjacket taking the stage. Warming up with Free’s “All Right Now”, a tribute to Paul Kossoff and Andy Fraser, their second song was a rock twist to the BB King classsic “Thrill Is Gone”. The set gained momentum with a couple of Rolling Stones numbers, the band’s tribute to drummer Charlie Watts. Next was Fleetwood Mac. The crowd joined in for the closing numbers. This included the late Prince’s “Purple Rain” and the Beatles’ classic “Hey Jude”, a tribute to Lennon and Harrison.

Next up was metal supergroup Outlaw with a colossal set of metal numbers. The group paid their tribute to bands like Black Sabbath, Van Halen, AC/DC, Motörhead, Metallica, Scorpions, Savatage and Iron Maiden. The set included AC/DC topper “TNT” and Metallica classic“For Whom The Bell Tolls”. The group started with a Sabbath medley. They closed the set with “Running Free” from Iron Maiden’s 1980 debut album as a tribute to the late vocalists.

Next to take the stage was another metal supergroup- Super X. The group belted songs by Ozzy, Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Death, Queen, Iron Maiden, Savatage and more! Ozzy’s Mr Crowley was the opening number. The setlist included the Queen classic “Love Of My Life” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”. The band closed the set with Maiden’s “Phantom Of The Opera” and Savatage’s “When The Crowd’s Are Gone”. The latter was a tribute to guitarist Criss Oliva.

Decider was the final act for the night, the final blow to the mayhem. The band kicked off with “Mob Rules,” the iconic title track from their 1981 album with vocalist Ronnie James Dio. The night ended with Savatage’s “Handful Of Rain”!

Incredible energy, loud growls, powerful drumming and hard-hitting guitar riffs – Threatfest “A Tribute To The Lost Legends” was a massive success – a sold-out show keeping the city’s spirit of metal alive.
