Ed Sheeran Teases Fans With Snippet of ‘Eyes Closed’ From His Upcoming Album, Inspired by Personal Trauma
It is a good day for Ed Sheeran fans as he has just released a sneak preview of an emotive new song on TikTok, that will feature on his future album (Subtract). Sheeran performs the song in one video while duetting with clips of himself playing the acoustic guitar. In another, he plays a piano rendition of the same.
With less than two months to go before the arrival of Ed Sheeran‘s Subtract, the singer revealed on Thursday (March 9) when the project’s first single, “Eyes Closed,”is scheduled to arrive.
“So I’m dancing with my eyes closed/ Cause everywhere I look I still see you/ Time is moving so slow/ And I don’t know what else that I can do/ So I’ll keep dancing with my eyes closed/ Oh I keep dancing with my eyes closed,” sings the 32-year-old.
After the recent news of Sheeran’s new studio album surfaced last week, he explained that it was motivated by personal traumas he has experienced, such as the diagnosis of his wife Cherry Seaborn and the passing of his close friend, British music entrepreneur and DJ, Jamal Edwards. In addition, Ed revealed his wife Cherry was diagnosed with a tumour during her pregnancy with their second child.
Eyes Closed is a testament to Sheeran’s struggles with mental health
In light of the events, the singer-songwriter stated that Subtract is an album of him making songs “that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life” for the first time. The artist, who boasts 13.4 million followers on TikTok, stated to the press, “I had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be.”
He continued, “Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts.”
Subtract – Ed Sheeran’s sixth full-length studio venture is set to arrive on May 5 with the first single coming March 24.
