In a heartbreaking announcement, renowned Australian metalcore band Polaris has shared the devastating news of the untimely death of their beloved lead guitarist, Ryan Siew. The 26-year-old, who had been an integral part of the group since 2013, passed away on the morning of Monday, June 19. Polaris expressed their profound grief, describing Siew as not only their bandmate but also their “best friend and artistic soulmate.” They fondly reminisced about his passions, such as his love for Harry Potter, psych-thrillers, and crime documentaries, which made their lives a little brighter everyday.
The band emphasized Siew’s extraordinary connection with music, noting that his passion extended far beyond the ordinary. They described him as a rare talent. One who spoke the language of music in ways that few could comprehend. Polaris also appealed for privacy and respect for Siew’s grieving family during this difficult time.
Aussie indie metal community mourns the loss of the exceptional guitarist
Ryan Siew joined Polaris in 2023, taking on the role of lead guitarist. As Rick Shneider, a member since the band’s formation in 2012, transitioned to rhythm guitar. Siew’s exceptional talent was showcased on both of Polaris’ full-length albums: “Mortal Coil” released in 2017 and “Death of Me” in 2020. The band is scheduled to release their highly anticipated third album, “Fatalism,” on September 1.
Polaris recently performed at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium on June 18 without Siew. Two days later, on June 20, the band made a somber announcement, stating that they would be cancelling the remaining dates of their European tour due to a “serious personal crisis in our family.”
While specifying which shows they would be unable to perform, they assured fans that they would be resolute in their commitment to those concerts that were still possible.
The music community, as well as Polaris fans around the world, have been left stunned by the tragic loss of Ryan Siew. Tributes and messages of support have poured in. Honoring his immense talent, contributions to the band, and the impact he had on those who knew him. The metalcore community will undoubtedly feel the deep void left by his absence.
No cause of death has been revealed. Although back in January, Siew shared a social media update in which he alluded to some “sobering” health scares.
