Opeth Released Second Single §3 From ‘The Last Will and Testament’ due Oct 2024

Opeth has unveiled their second single, §3, from their upcoming album The Last Will and Testament. While last month’s release, §1, marked the band’s return to their death metal roots after a 16-year break, §3 leans heavily into the prog rock side of their sound. The track is packed with intricate riffs and sweeping orchestration, showing off their signature technicality.

The album is shaping up to be a mix of styles, with vocalist and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt explaining the reintroduction of death metal elements in a recent Metal Hammer interview. Åkerfeldt credits the album’s concept as one of the reasons for this shift, noting how the material naturally called for a heavier touch. He also pointed out bassist Martín Méndez’s influence, who suggested adding something “really heavy” to the mix, and new drummer Waltteri Väyrynen’s enthusiasm for the genre.

With The Last Will and Testament set to drop on October 11 via Moderbolaget and Reigning Phoenix Music, fans won’t have to wait long to hear the full scope of Opeth’s latest evolution. The band is kicking off a North American tour with Tribulation on the same day, followed by a UK and European tour in February.
