Jimi Hendrix fans will soon get a closer look at the rock legend’s private life through a new exhibition opening at his former London home.
The exhibition will launch on June 19 at 23 Brook Street, the Mayfair flat where Hendrix lived with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham during the late 1960s. The property now forms part of Handel Hendrix House, the museum dedicated to both Hendrix and composer George Frideric Handel, who lived next door at 25 Brook Street from 1723 to 1759.
Organisers will display memorabilia that reveals a more personal side of the legendary guitarist. Items include documents from Anim Records, the management company behind the Jimi Hendrix Experience, alongside personal receipts and diaries belonging to Patricia “Trixie” Sullivan, assistant to Hendrix’s manager Mike Jeffery.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund helped support the exhibition, which aims to highlight a rare period of stability in Hendrix’s life.
Claire Davies, curator of the exhibition, said the items offer a unique glimpse into Hendrix’s domestic world away from his stage persona. She explained that Hendrix considered the Brook Street flat the only true home he had during his short career in London.
Among the most striking discoveries are receipts showing Hendrix purchased expensive Persian rugs to furnish the apartment. According to Davies, the rugs would now be worth around £30,000.
