Scorpions India Tour Cancelled – Meghalaya Hospitality Sector in Shambles

The abrupt cancellation of the Scorpions’ “Coming Home” India tour has dealt a significant blow to Meghalaya’s hospitality sector, especially in the state capital where tourism activity was peaking.

Hotels across Shillong and nearby tourist areas had already reached around 70 percent occupancy ahead of the April 21 concert. Industry estimates suggest last-minute bookings would have pushed occupancy close to full capacity. However, the cancellation has triggered widespread booking withdrawals, with nearly 60 to 70 percent of the expected 9,000 visitors cancelling their plans.

Mid-range hotels, which rely heavily on event-driven demand, have been hit the hardest. With average room rates between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000, the segment was expected to benefit from peak tourist inflow. Instead, over 3,000 room bookings have reportedly been cancelled, resulting in considerable revenue losses.

“Though exact amount of less cannot be quantified right now but at least there were bookings of around 70 per cent rooms.,” said Parambir Singh Sehdave, President, The Federation of Shillong Hotels.

According to a fan’s comment on the official statement released on Instagram by BookMyShow, singer Klaus Meine is battling a severe respiratory infection and bacterial bronchitis, forcing the cancellation of multiple South American tour dates, including shows in India.

BookMyShow promises refunds to heartbroken fans

The impact extends beyond accommodation. Restaurants, transport services, tour operators and local vendors are also facing sudden business losses due to reduced tourist activity.

The German rock band cancelled its India tour citing health concerns. “We regret to inform you that the Scorpions ‘Coming Home’ India Tour scheduled in Shillong on April 21st, Delhi-NCR on April 24th, Bengaluru on April 26th and Mumbai on April 30th, stands cancelled due to unforeseen medical circumstances affecting the band members,” organisers announced.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment caused to fans. The band are very keen to perform in India when possible and within their schedule. All the tickets purchased on bookmyshow will be automatically refunded within 7-10 working days,” the statement added.

Stakeholders have called for better contingency planning to reduce such economic disruptions during peak seasons.

The incident follows a string of Indian-leg cancellations of tours by major global acts including John Mayer, Muse, Kanye West, and The Smashing Pumpkins.
