San Bruno-based American global online video sharing and social media platform YouTube, has announced an expansion for its Total Reach metric which was previously included for only official content and long-form videos. The Total Reach metric will now include data relating to YouTube Shorts, according to an announcement from Google-owned YouTube. This will give musicians a better understanding of how viewers across the platform see their music.
“As of this month, ‘Analytics for Artists’ Total Reach metrics from YouTube include fan-uploaded Shorts. This new metric shows how many people your music is reaching across all formats, making it the most comprehensive snapshot of the size of an artist’s audience on YouTube,” Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of Music, said in a blog post.
Additionally, Cohen said that fan-made Shorts raised the average artist’s audience of unique watchers by more than 80% in January of this year. Also, Shorts users said that, on average, more than 50% of their new channel subscribers originated from their Shorts postings.
Furthermore, the company also declared that they have, “created a brand new Songs section in Analytics to help artists see how fans are listening to their music or creating with it, across all video formats, all in one place”.
YouTube gets average traffic of more than 2.5 billion monthly users, who collectively watch more than one billion hours of videos each day. According to a 2019 report, the rate of upload for videos was more than 500 hours of content per minute. Since its purchase by Google, YouTube has expanded beyond the core website into mobile apps, network television, and the ability to link with other platforms.
