Former One Direction star Liam Payne has tragically died after falling from his hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 31-year-old British singer was found unresponsive in the interior patio of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel after plunging from his third-floor room, local police confirmed on Wednesday.
Authorities were called to the scene after receiving reports of a man behaving erratically in the hotel lobby. Witnesses said Payne appeared agitated, broke his laptop, and had to be escorted back to his room. Police indicated the singer may have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident.
Emergency services pronounced Payne dead at the scene. According to social media reports, he had been in Argentina to attend a concert by his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan.
Payne, who shot to global fame as part of One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, had publicly struggled with addiction in recent years. In 2021, he revealed that he became dependent on prescription drugs and alcohol during the band’s tours, and even experienced suicidal thoughts.
Although One Direction went on hiatus in 2015, Liam Payne pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album LP1 in 2019. He had been planning a new album and tour in 2023, but had recently postponed his shows due to a kidney infection. His latest single, ‘Teardrops,‘ was released in March 2024.
