K-Pop Star Moonbin of Astro Fame Found Dead at Seoul Residence on Wednesday

Moonbin, a famed member of the boy band Astro, died late Wednesday. According to reports by South Korean police and his label, Fantiago Music, the 25-year-old K-pop star was found dead at his residence in Seoul triggering grieving outrage among fans. A spokesperson for the National Police Agency told AFP that no evidence of foul play was found.

In an official statement posted to Twitter, Fantiago Music stated “First, we apologize for having to convey this sorrowful and heartbreaking news. On April 19, ASTRO member Moonbin suddenly left us and has now become a star in the sky. Although it cannot compare to the grief of the bereaved family that had to part with their beloved son and brother, his fellow artists and the staff here at Fantagio, who have been together with him for a long time, are also deeply mourning the departed amidst tremendous shock and sorrow.”

“It pains us, even more, to have to convey this sudden news to the fans who have given their unsparing love and support to Moonbin. In order for the bereaved family, who has fallen into great sorrow due to this sudden tragedy, to be able to respectfully mourn the departed and say their goodbyes, we entreat you to please refrain from speculative or malicious reports,” concluded the statement.

The loss was also lamented by other K-pop stars, including RM, the frontman of BTS. In response to Moonbin’s untimely passing, RM, alias Kim Namjoon, posted a monochromatic image on his Instagram account. The black image conveys that it is a heartbreaking day for the K-pop business.

Additionally, as soon as ASTRO member Cha Eunwoo, who was in the US, heard the news, he immediately departed for Korea. A number of K-pop musicians who were planning to make their comebacks or debuts pushed back their teasers and releases for the upcoming few days. Even the musicians’ promotional endeavours have been put on hold as they grieve and ask God to provide Moonbin serenity.

Moon Bin, also known as Moonbin, was a musician who was associated with Astro and the duo Moonbin & Sanha. Early on, he enrolled in the Fantagio label’s training programme. Before his Astro debut in February 2016, he worked as a model and actor. Six artists comprised the initial ensemble before one quit in February 2023. Moon Sua, a member of the girl group Billlie, is Moonbin’s sister and also a K-pop star. Moonbin’s death has prompted some soul-searching in the K-pop industry where stars deal with cut-throat competition, a lack of privacy and online bullying.

K-pop artists are discovered by agencies at a young age, typically in their early to mid-teens, and live in a controlled environment with their days occupied by demanding musical and dancing training. According to recent official statistics, South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, making it one of the leading causes of death for those under the age of 40.
