A new documentary celebrating Neil Peart’s remarkable life and legacy will arrive at a major Canadian film festival, bringing Rush fans a closer look.
Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 16, spotlighting the life and career of the legendary Rush drummer. A public screening will follow on September 19.
Directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, the filmmakers behind Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, Iron Maiden: Flight 666 and Metal Evolution, the 96-minute documentary traces Peart’s journey from his early struggles as a musician to his rise as one of rock’s most influential drummers.
The film features interviews with Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, alongside reflections from prominent drummers. Lee and Lifeson also perform Rush classics with Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stewart Copeland of The Police, Danny Carey of Tool and Gavin Harrison of King Crimson and Porcupine Tree taking over drum duties.
An archival interview captures Peart discussing his commitment to constantly improving as a drummer and keeping his playing fresh.
Peart died aged 67 on January 7, 2020, in Santa Monica, California, following a three-year battle with glioblastoma. Lee and Lifeson subsequently remembered their bandmate as a close friend, soul brother and musical partner.
The documentary will also air on CBC’s The Passionate Eye on September 23.
