A restless mind in motion
New York rapper and producer Arjun Dhar, who records as One Lovers, fits 10 tracks into the 15-minute runtime of God Talks With Arjuna. Inspired by Paramahansa Yogananda’s spiritual commentary of the same name, the album focuses on questions of control, purpose and identity.
“So It Goes” opens with a dense run of references and internal rhymes. Dhar’s delivery is calm, although the mind behind it is clearly moving fast. He jumps from watching a scene grow around him to imagining fan mail from the Pope, then lands on the admission, “I want more than what’s bought and sold.” The recurring “so it goes” sounds weary, almost casual. He has ambitions he can’t switch off and doubts he can’t quite outrun.

“Burn”has a soft sung refrain alongside the rapped vocals. That small melodic change matters on such a brief album. It cuts through the density of Dhar’s writing and gives the track a gentler pull without sanding down its unease.
Short songs, crowded thoughts
On “Muzak,” Dhar blends hazy, ambient production with abstract and introspective rap writing. The soft, blurred beat leaves plenty of room for his lyrics while keeping a slight tension underneath. It suits a track where confidence and anxiety often sit close together.
“Muzak,” “Parts Unknown” and “Away Games” are all short. At times, this makes the songs feel direct and memorable. A few end before their ideas have had enough time to develop. “Ordinary People,” with additional vocals from penelope*, is one of the album’s more melodic tracks. Her soft singing gives the music breathing room and makes the song easier to connect with on a first listen.
Titles such as “Leaves of Grass” and “Often I Am Permitted to Return to a Meadow” add to the album’s literary and reflective tone. They suit a record built around someone trying to understand himself, even when there are no easy answers.

God Talks With Arjuna works best when Dhar’s confidence and self-doubt appear in the same verse. The album doesn’t end with a clear breakthrough. He is still looking for answers and asking what his need for control may have cost him.
