Motörhead fans worldwide are buzzing with excitement as news breaks of a monumental tribute planned for the band’s iconic frontman. The Staffordshire town that witnessed the rise of Motörhead is set to honor their legendary son with a striking 7 ft statue.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council has given the green light for the 2.2-meter statue of Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister in his birthplace, Burslem. Local sculptor Andy Edwards, previously famed for the Beatles statue in Liverpool, will craft the tribute from Staffordshire clay pending a £50,000 fundraising campaign.
Despite initial police concerns, the council approved the plan with a heightened plinth at 3 meters. The chosen site is in front of Burslem’s historic Town Hall, showcasing the statue against the backdrop of the iconic Gold Angel.
Commercial developer Mark Curran initiated the project during the 2020 lockdown, aiming to immortalize Lemmy’s legacy. Cross-party support from the council reflects the town’s enthusiasm for the homage.
The statue follows a precedent set by Los Angeles’ Rainbow Bar & Grill, where a tribute to Lemmy was erected a year after his 2015 passing. In conclusion, as fundraising gains momentum, Burslem anticipates the installation of this landmark celebrating the heavy metal legend’s enduring influence.
