Chappell Roan released the video after viral TikTok success, alongside announcing fall pop-up shows and teasing her next album.
Chappell Roan has dropped the official video for her highly anticipated single “The Subway,” just hours after its release. Directed by Amber Grace Johnson (known for work with FKA Twigs and Jorja Smith), the visually striking video brings Roan’s heartbreak-fueled NYC fantasy to life with surreal, cinematic flair.
Set against the city’s iconic backdrops, the pop-star roams the sidewalks in exaggerated wigs, splashes through the Washington Square Park fountain, and strips off a business suit in the street breeze -all culminating in a dreamy subway ride. The video echoes the emotional depth of the ballad, which Roan first performed at the 2024 Governors Ball over a year ago.

“The cliché of ‘the girl that got away’ barely scratches the surface,” Roan said in a statement.
I wrote it while stumbling around New York with a broken heart, imagining us in every part of the city -every fire escape, coffee shop, and yes… the subway.
Before its official release, “The Subway” gained momentum on TikTok, where fans used the soaring outro, “She’s got, she’s got a way” in over 100,000 nostalgic posts.

The video arrives just days after Roan announced her upcoming “Visions of Damsels and Other Dangerous Things” pop-up tour, set for September and October. The run includes four nights at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium, two in Kansas City, and two at Pasadena’s Brookside at the Rose Bowl.
Chappell Roan is currently working on the follow-up to her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. “The Subway” marks her first release since “The Giver,” following the massive success of “Good Luck, Babe!” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts internationally.
