Proklaim is a British-born, Namibia based rapper who usually plays within the genres of hip-hop and afrobeats. However, on his latest single “Life” we see him experiment with instrumentation that does not find a place in his discography often! It is refreshing to witness the artist explore new waters and flow over some really funky production.

We see Proklaim sharpening his signature flow and leaning in more towards his characteristic sound on “Life”. The deep layering of his vocals along with his unique ad-libs are features we have witnessed in his discography previously. I particularly enjoyed the production on the bridge that had minimal strings and hard-hitting percussion.

The instrumentation on “Life” is reminiscent of 80s disco although it intends to create a soothing ambience rather than a dance-y one. It is vintage, old school and brings a sense of nostalgia with it. The dreamy production has bright synths, groovy strings and an extremely funky bassline which was one of my favourite elements on the track!
The songwriting speaks to the spirit of exploration that is a pre-requisite for getting an idea from seed to fruition. As with all tracks by Proklaim, this one has wisdom sprinkled all throughout. He motivates the listener to trust their instinct despite contradictions and confusions; explores the idea of life being a series of choices and a mindset that can make all the difference. There is emphasis placed on having a vision and taking the necessary steps to watch it happen. The line “I never pass time I learn to put it all to use” displays his wit while he also makes references to faith through the line “Moves that are made have been designed”.
“Life” by proclaim has a refreshing sonic palette and interesting production. Make sure to check it out here:
