Brian Loyde, the singer-songwriter based in the United States has an endearing origin story. As someone who self-admittedly wasn’t the most experienced musician, he decided to write and sing a song for his wife on their 25th anniversary and hence was born his first single “Spend a life” which he decided to release on Spotify. This genre of writing and singing about his love for the people closest to him is his forte and his third single “Daughter Makes the Man” dedicated to his daughters fits right into this canon.

The simple production on the track is reminiscent of “Stand By Me” by Ben E King. The bell sounds that run throughout are wholesome and reminds one of Christmas. The percussion matches the energy of the song while the strings play a strong role in keeping the track thematically coherent. The vocal harmonies by Brian Loyde feel authentic. The track samples the laughter and voices of his daughters both at the beginning and towards the end which I thought was a great personal touch. We have recently seen popular artists like Beyonce and Kanye West do the same and it is interesting to see this rise up in independent music as well.

The lyrics explore the ways in which his daughters have affected his life by bringing joy and meaning into it; making his dreams come true. They also explore how he chooses to affect theirs, by cherishing time with them, being there for them and loving them unconditionally. Words of affirmation like “remember to laugh”, “be silly” and “no limit to the things you can be” are sprinkled throughout. Brian Loyde reminds them to treat people with respect with kindness and his pride about being their father is made explicit.
Brian Loyde has a niche audience that is strongly rooted in their affection for their family and love for one’s roots. His musical self-expression is charming and evidently comes from a place of honesty.
