Wavewulf on Electronica track “In Every Blue”: cathartic melancholy

Wavewulf is a music project by Nicholas Long who has been experimenting with synthesizers and the possibilities it creates for music since the age of 13. His interest was self-admittedly sparked at a Depeche Mode concert which he then took forward along with local bands, skill-enhancing production; now translating to an extensive discography. Losing both his parents to cancer after graduate school heavy influences his art and the kinds of themes he chooses to explore as is evident in his latest single “In Every Blue”

“In Every Blue” starts off with very sharp synths that have a touch of melancholy to them. Instrumentally Wavewulf keeps its simple with the heavy and hard-hitting 808-esque beat filled with hi-hats. The lead vocalist gives a monotone vocal performance which when juxtaposed with the high-pitched airy back-up vocals adds texture to the song. The dance beats in the chorus are unexpected, although not fully unpredictable given how truly modern the beat is. The pleasant surprise has vocal layering that feels all-encompassing along with nostalgic early 2000s keys. The switch in energy levels in the track is welcome!

The songwriting explores a dark head space using extensive metaphors from nature such as skies, rains and stars to describe helplessness. It is a reassuring love letter from friends that promises safety and unconditional support and care. This divine sensibility is evident an adds a supernatural element to the track.
