Lethia’s Natorium is a music project by singer-songwriter Pena Hughe-John that explores the artist’s punk, reggae-fusion and rock personas. While the musician is known for live folk performances with her ukelele, this project brings to light her more gothic side. She has been releasing music since 2022 and has over a short period of time built up an extensive discography. Her latest single “Sometimes” explores the different and often contradictory feelings on a rock tune!

“Sometimes” has very consistent instrumentation that does not play around with energy levels much. The guitars are urgent while the percussion is heavy and energetic. The guitar solo has a bright and cheery spin the sonic palette that otherwise remains fairly dark. The production is as rock as rock can get!

Pena Hughe-John’s vocals are strong and she uses it powerfully, giving a spoken-word like performance. She embraces her rough edges and enunciations unapologetically and has the capacity to hold an entire room’s attention. I thought that the back-up vocals were layered cleverly.
Lyrically the track is an exploration of feeling the things on opposite ends of a spectrum “Sometimes, not all the time”. She speaks to feelings of being grateful and resentful for the same set of realities ranging from strength, mood, gender presentation to loneliness, social battery and memory. The short track gives perspective and insight into how the same situation can feel like a blessing or a curse depending on the time.
