Xenia throws a nostalgic Pop party with “Sunshine in July”

Xenia is a singer-songwriter based in Australia who has an extensive discography of Chill- Pop music given that she has been releasing music since 2021. Her music has a whimsical, dreamy and ethereal touch that she places on top of electronic beats to create her own sonic palette. Her new single “Sunshine in July” is a nostalgic summery dance track.

The track has guitar tones that it starts off with that are reminiscent of early 2010s Pop music. The strings form the foundation of the single and was one of my favourite elements on it. The electronic beats are delicate, letting the snare be lighter so that the bass can hit harder and do most of the heavy-lifting for the percussion on track. Elements of dance music and acoustic performance are combined throughout, especially in the chorus where the beat picks up energy. Ambient sound effects are used liberally which add to the track in my opinion.

Lead vocals by Xenia is kept light such that it flows over the beats quite smoothly. I found that the backup vocals were layered interestingly to add to the ambience. Lyrically the track is reminiscent of someone from the past and speaks to how their memories and presence will live on regardless. “I’ll always remember you like the sunshine in July” is an endearing sentiment and an important line that is repeated throughout the track.

“Sunshine in July” is an accurate title for the single given that the song does remind one of the mild suns in the summer. The track captures the feeling of missing someone’s warm presence perfectly without compromising on danceability.
