Covo Perfects Layered Textures in Mellow Electronica Single “Streets Feel Strange”

Covo, an artist from San Antonio, combines EDM, indie/alternative, and pop punk to create a unique genre he refers to as “emotronica.” Through his music project, he addresses the challenges posed by capitalism while also exploring themes of romance and nature.

Covo’s new single “Streets Feel Strange” pulled me in from the first few notes. It starts with a melancholic guitar riff that sets a dreamy, nostalgic mood. Layered atmospheric synths swell in, transporting the listener to another place. As the track builds, a steady rhythm emerges to hold it all together. The bassline gave the song movement as the beats pulse along. Before long, I found myself nodding along, caught up in the groove.

The vocals are where the heart of the song lies. Covo’s voice soars over the top, adding emotion and vulnerability to the listener’s experience. You can feel the longing and isolation in his tone. The lyrics repeatedly questioning “I don’t feel home anymore” really resonated with feelings of displacement.

What stood out most to me was the layered textures and attention to detail. Each new element, from riffs to keys to synths, enhanced the atmosphere. It felt like glancing through a kaleidoscope of sound. The song takes the listener on a journey with its ebbs and flows.

By the end, when it breaks into a jazzy, improvised feel, I was truly transported. Covo demonstrates his skills as both an artist and a craftsman in this single. “Streets Feel Strange” pulls you deep inside its world and doesn’t let go. It’s an emotional and impactful listen from start to finish.

We recently had an opportunity to have a fun conversation with Covo about his new release and beyond. Keep reading to know more.

Q: Hi Covo, thanks for joining us! Let’s dive straight into your music. “Streets Feel Strange” is such an amazing blend of electronica and pop punk. Can you walk us through the creative process behind this track?

A: Usually, it takes me absolutely forever to complete a track. I just do bits and pieces of it over months at a time. For Streets Feel Strange, I started with the “drop” portion of the song and worked backward until everything came together.

Q: “Streets Feel Strange” has such intricate layers of synth work and atmosphere. How did you balance maintaining the melody with building complexity?

A: Honestly by adding a bunch of layers during jam sessions, and then subtracting and refining them into every piece fit. Sometimes that involved completely removing drum patterns or samples that just don’t perfectly. I hate falling into the trap of over-producing, so eventually I just needed to call it done and take what I learned for the next track.

Q: What was the songwriting process like for “Streets Feel Strange”? Did the vision change at all from the initial concept to the final product?

A: I knew I wanted to write about this feeling I got every time I stepped into my car and drove around my city of San Antonio. The city has it’s beauty, but it’s surrounded by an awful behemonth of transit concrete and it’s pretty depressing.

Q: What are your hopes for how listeners interpret and connect with “Streets Feel Strange”?

A: I hope listeners can resonate with the message of the song while they are driving as well. America is one giant concrete jungle in lot of their cities. We’re all just isolated from each other, commuting every day to our dumb pointless jobs. Who agreed that this is how life should be? Honking and road rage – I feel like we’ve lost the meaning of humanity.

Q: What’s next for you creatively? Any plans for an album or future musical directions you’re exploring?

A: I have two more singles in the works releasing before the end of the summer season that will be my best work yet (I’m biased of course)! So please stay tuned for that. I also will finally have enough original material to play live, so my goal is to start around the Texas area and slowly get better at playing live in front of others.
