Trash Pals evoke summery nostalgia with latest single “Sonya”

Trash Pals is an indie rock duo consisting of musician Conor Rayne and Gabe Schnider who are the producers of their latest single “Sonya”. They have been releasing music since 2023 and have 6 singles and one EP under their belt. The music project has an endearing origin story with the artists meeting as teenagers at summer camp. The 15-year-old friendship is kept alive through trust, and a mutual love for music. This personal anecdote makes the artists so much more likable and embodies the fact that relationships and the desire to be creative and have fun together is what makes independent music what it is.

“Sonya” is a short summery track which the cover art of the track with its stunningly clear skies reinforces. The instrumentation is simple with upbeat percussion and short and quick guitar strums holding centre stage. The chord progression on the guitar gives off a synth-like effect and the intentionally blurred chorus instrumentation invokes feelings of nostalgia. The vocal harmonies on the single that leaves a soothing effect was my favourite piece of production on the track.

Lyrically the track explores a hyper-specific description of the personhood and life experience of a girl whom the listener can only assume is “Sonya”. The band self-admittedly writes from a personal space which to them is a process of making sense of the ups and downs of life. This adds a personal touch and makes room a sense of mystery and varied interpretations.

If you are looking to add a feel-good summery track to your playlist, I recommend giving “Sonya” by Trash Pals and shot!
