Singer-songwriter Matthew Read is soothing on “Need it most”

Matthew Read is an independent singer-songwriter based in Liverpool, United Kingdom. He released his first single “Handpicked Flowers” in 2019 and since then has built up a discography of six more along with an EP. His upcoming EP consists of four songs he has worked on in the last three years during his journey being diagnosed and treated for cancer. The first track of the EP “Need it most” releases today!

“Need it most” is the kind of track one listens to while watching the sunset, it has an inherently calming essence to it. It starts off with very bright strings, strummed in a fast but soothing and rhythmic pattern. The percussion is kept extremely light and decides where to place emphasis on the track. The Vocals by Matthew Read take centre stage on the track and he keeps husky with hints of inflections from country music. I liked the way his voice was layered occasionally and overall felt like the vocal performance was very on-brand with the UK Singer-songwriter sonic theme.

The track sticks to conventional song structure and keeps it simple in terms of the number of elements it brings up in true singer-songwriter fashion. The electric guitar is echoed out and plays the core melody at the bridge which I thought was in interesting take on the section. The songwriting is intentionally convoluted, keeping things mysterious, lyrical and poetic. Matthew Read speaks about the guiding force of love and safety and the words capture the feeling of missing someone, describing their memory as existing in an abstract realm.
