Lars Jakob Rudjord emotes in “Two Weddings and Two Funerals”

Lars Jakob Rudjord is Modern Classical pianist and music composer from the South of Norway. He is self-admittedly influenced by South Norwegian folk tales, Nordic Jazz traditions and Neo-classical music and often borrows from nature to create work. He works primarily in the instrumental genre although his tracks are usually about something very specific and particular. With three albums under his belt since 2016, “Two Wedding and Two Funerals” is the third single from his upcoming album “Kjempe-Jo”.

“Two Weddings and Two Funerals” has only two elements in terms of instruments – the keys and the bowed strings that slide in towards the second half of the track. Lars Jakob Rudjord starts off with a melody a that is whispered very slowly, reminding one of the morning light that gets warmer and louder when it repeats itself. The second melody that is layered on top of this is higher in terms of pitch which adds a sense of brightness to the track.  Some part of the bowed instrument plays with ambience and holds down chords to create mood while the other plays a melody that is in harmony with the keys and its pacing.

“Two Weddings and Two Funerals” appropriate to its title does sound like something that would play at a either a wedding or a funeral. It is at once melancholic and beautiful, making one wonder about the similarities between these two ceremonies. Sometimes it reminds you of birthdays even though this occasion is not a part of the song title.

“Two Weddings and Two Funerals is calm and classically inspired. Lars Jakob Rudjord is capable of evoking emotion with simple instrumentation in this track. I look forward to the upcoming album inspired by his great-great grandfather Kjempe-Jo!
