Super Saiyan Jay bring a Southern hip-hop flow to “Jersey Girls”

Super Saiyan Jay is the artist-name of Jalen Lindsey, a Florida based rapper. The artist has a quirky online presence and has been releasing music since 2019, building up a strong discography of singles and EPs. His latest EP “Jersey Girls” is in collaboration with fellow Palm Beach artist and rapper King Dev.

The short 5 track EP starts off with the track “Dirty Diana” presumably named after the iconic song by Micheal Jackson. The track incorporates hyper-pop in its high-pitched electronic keys and clappy percussion and plays with EDM in its very strong bass heavy beat. In combining the two with hip-hop and rap, the track sits comfortably in the space between these varied genres. With interesting vocal effects sprinkled in all throughout, the song serves as the perfect start to a party that is about to go hard!
“Back To The Crib” follows this up with a smooth beginning and a tropical sonic palette interspaced with extremely dance worthy Afrobeats. The rappers introduce their bars with an interesting cadence and overall, I found the way the track plays with timing and pauses quite engaging. The delivery incorporates alliteration, repetition and stammering as creative choices while the echoed-out ambience serves as the backdrop to it all.

“Put Love First” has brashy vocals with an ethereal background that brings in a much-needed breath of fresh air in terms of the sonic palette. The keys are sombre and the soothing and remains one of my favourite pieces of instrumentation on the EP. The strong bass runs in the background, acting as the track’s backbone. The songwriting is affirmative and speaks in poetic forms about overcoming struggles and placing love at the forefront.
“Jersey Girl” keeps it simple in terms of instrumentation where limited elements such as the clicky percussion, heavy beats, sample and vocals are enough to keep it alive. The ambience setting bass creates an anthemic effect and helps the track stay engaging during its pauses. The endearing songwriting describes infatuation, desire and attraction without crossing the line of overt sexualisation.

The EP closes itself out with “Beautiful Soul” which has synth heavy beats inspired by House music. The track incorporates many more elements of electronic and mechanical production like the sound of clocks compared to the rest of the EP. The keys are a sombre and melancholic touch. This track has a strong rhyme scheme with creative wordplay, expressing the loss of words in the presence of perfection.
The songwriting gets more vulnerable as the EP progresses and I personally wished it had been so right from the start especially given that the artists prove later on the EP that they are capable of poetic writing. Some more variation on the clap filled 808s that sound adjacent to Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock” could have added texture to the album in my opinion!

Super Saiyan Jay has a keen ear for samples and has chosen some of the most unique pieces to incorporate into “Jersey Girls”. It is one thing to choose the right sample and another to revamp it creatively and the artist is adept at both which is a testament to his production skills! Both the rappers deliver some groovy flows on “Dirty Diana” that plays like an extended DJ session! Make sure to check it out here:
